Katy Perry – “Chained To The Rhythm” Review

The world’s most consistent pop star –Katy Perry is back with a sure-fire smash hit, in the form of “Chained To The Rhythm.”

She’s been off the scene since her Super Bowl triumph back in 2015, but now she’s ready to unleash a new era upon us!

The great thing about Perry is that she gives us what we want – a pure pop banger. No, it won’t change the musical landscape or be remembered in decades to come, but it’s what we need right now to get through the tough times in the world.

Sonically the song sounds like it’s straight from the 80s with its pulsing synths only modernised with its tropical swirls and echoes. Perry’s vocals are slightly distorted which I usually find takes away from tracks, however, here it fits right in with the sound of the song.

The middle eight, which is taken by Skip Marley – Bob Marley’s grandson – flows perfectly on from KP. The tropical flavours in the production really suit his Caribbean tones.

Co-penned by Sia and Max Martin discusses – on the surface – dancing all your worries away, but when you look at the lyrics through a different eye they seem to reflect what’s happening politically in the world.

“ARE WE CRAZY?/LIVING OUT LIVES THROUGH A LENS/TRAPPED IN OUR WHITE PICKET FENCE, LIKE ORNAMENTS/SO COMFORTABLE,WE’RE LIVING IN A BUBBLE”

Welcome back KP, we’ll see you at the Grammys.
