James Vickery – “Lately” Review

James Vickery’s “Lately” is an effortless cool track that oozes old-school influences from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill.

Vickery’s first major introduction to the pop world was when he featured on Disclosure’s track, “Flow.”

“Lately” starts out with a kind of acoustic jazzy vibe to it with its simple clicks and vocal run before bringing in the electronic influences for the chorus with a housey bassline.

The track sounds similar to “Latch,” but rather than sounding like a copy, it sounds like it draws influence from it.

Some parts of the production, especially parts in the pre-chorus, wouldn’t sound lost on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is a huge comparison when you think of the legacy of the album.

Vickery may not have the strongest voice in the pop sphere but he sure knows how to use both his voice and the production of his tracks to make a little bit of magic.
