Steps are finally back, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but “Scared Of The Dark” is actually fucking amazing!
We all loved Steps back in the day for cheesy 90s pop, along with the likes of B*Witched and S Club 7, but when they left it didn’t really leave a massive yearning for more – how wrong we were.
This is how comebacks are done! Not the shitty Spice Girl ballad, “Headlines,” nor the half-arsed S Club reunion – what even was that?! – but this! A roaring ball of ABBA-esque cheese that manages to sound current.
What’s great about this song is that it’s obviously Steps, yet at they same time they don’t sound like Steps, and they sound current without actually sounding like anything in the charts. It makes no sense but it’s wonderful!
The track starts off with an epic violin opening, then quickly makes a sharp turn and sounds like we could be getting a ballad (yawn) – THEN THE CHORUS HITS!
Huge ABBA-like disco synths start crashing down to make a gloriously camp comeback.
Do we care what the lyrics are? No. Do we care what they sound like? Not really, but surprisingly they sound really good and not like they’ve taken a massive break from the limelight.
The only negative of the song is the bridge where “in your arms” is repeated for what seems like a million years, but even that is saved with an epic key change for the final chorus!
We all thought Gaga was the only one to pull that off, well Steps have just outdone her in both key change amazingness and campness!
Welcome back Steps!
