They all have one, Lady Gaga, P!nk and Christina Aguilera, most bounce back but the slump is always remembered – is it finally Katy Perry‘s time?
Perry has been pops sweetheart ever since “I Kissed A Girl” back in 2008, racking up number ones like nobodies business – eight to be exact!
So after a three-year break, we were all ecstatic to hear she was planning a big comeback and hopefully bringing the fun-loving pop she always brings!
First single, “Chained To The Rhythm,” wasn’t typical Perry, but it was a welcome change, going forward with a political edge.
I personally loved/love the single, but it soon began to free-fall down the chart – much unlike her usually hits that stay in the top ten for weeks on end.
The murmurs of “flop” quickly started spreading, something that is totally unjustified – a song that reaches number four isn’t a flop…although by Perry standards, maybe?
The major downfall though came with the release of new single, “Bon Appétit.”
Let’s be honest, it’s not totally shit, but it’s not great either though, is it? It totally went back on the ‘purposeful pop’ that “Chained” started to push.
The singles aren’t the only problem, Perry has had an epic miss-fire of a joke about Obama and her hair, she’s collaborated with homophobics (well, they’ve not said the greatest things about the LGBT community) and THAT Met Gala dress.
The Gala dress wasn’t disastrous, if Gaga was wearing it, it might have worked, but on Perry, it just seemed a total misfire – the dress was created by John Galliano who has expressed anti-semitic views in the past.
It’s safe to say that it hasn’t been the best week for Perry.
But can this era be saved?
Bionic, was Aguilera’s fall, something that she’s struggled to fix since.
However, there are plenty of artists that suffer a ‘bad’ album and successfully come back.
P!nk’s third and fourth album didn’t pack the hits that we came to expect from the rocker, but her career has gone from strength to strength since.
Gaga’s ARTPOP wasn’t the world dominating album that her previous records had been, but since she’s ventured into jazz, acting and has come back with country album, Joanne.
Even the queen, Beyoncé, has suffered a ‘cursed’ era, although it wasn’t the slump that many have. 4 didn’t quite pack on the singles front – other than “Love On Top” – and look at her now, she’s literally pop royalty.
So Perry can climb back to the top, or even fix this era – but it’s going to take a bit of work and better single than “Bon Appétit.”
People have said someone in her team is out to sabotage her, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
