Miley Cyrus has released her ‘gimmick-free’ comeback single, “Malibu,” after a few years wait – and it’s slightly (very) lacklustre.
All twerking, all tongue-wagging and all round wild-child, Miley Cyrus has returned and she’s shed the hip-hop vibes and the crazy aesthetic – if you haven’t heard from the countless press sites reporting on it – to some controversy.
And to be honest, it isn’t worth it.
If you were like me back in 2013, Cyrus just ended up pissing you off, but I still waited with baited breath to see what she did next – yes, she went too far, but it was still fun (to an extent).
So, is “Malibu” able to bring the excitement that the old Cyrus brand used to?
On one side, the track is a nice departure from the extremely busy Bangerz and Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, but on the other, it’s really dull.
It’s a pop-rock mid-tempo song that goes through the motions and doesn’t really go anywhere – well, it runs into a half-arsed breakdown.
However, this shouldn’t feel like a huge surprise, Cyrus has always dabbled in this sort of sound, from her backyard sessions to her ballads and collabs over the years, she’s always been able to show this softer, mature side of her.
The main problem that sticks out like a sore thumb – which we don’t mean to go on about – but is the apparent sonic change.
Knowing what she did before makes this song duller than it probably is.
Ending on a high note – it’s a cute, nice, breezy track…that is all!
